Overview-Joy of Missing Out

Jomo aims to help young people(espcially those who are addicted to social media) find balance between easing the fear of missing out and improving their productivity. It allows user focus on their tasks while being able to catch information that they might not want to miss. In this way, Jomo provides a place where users can embrace moments of stillness and self-awareness in the fast-paced world.

Background

Many of my friends are using social media more frequently, as they get used to taking their phones out to post something or checking other people‘s post. The impact on their efficiency of studying and working is particularly strong, and I found out that the fear of missing out is a remarkable mechanism that triggers higher usage of social networks.

Problem Statement

How might we reduce the fear of missing out and focus on improving the productivity?

Ideation

  • Gamified Focus Mode

-Users can choose different focus modes that correspond to different points rewards.

-General focus mode allows users to view the information list every half hour, while deep focus mode requires users full attention.

-Rewards can be used to unlock achievements to increase user stickiness.

  • Information List

-Users could log in with their social account.

-It gathers information posted by friends on social media and show the corresponding words.

-Users can click on the words to view the information missed during the focus time.

  • Time Visualisation

-Users can select different time frames to see the time they focus.

-Users will be able to see the time allocation, progress and have better control over time.

  • Interaction with Friends

Users can invite with their friends on the app to focus together so that they could earn more Jomo coins and unlock achievements.

Reflection

Digitalisation and timely updated information brings a lot of convenience, but what people see and think is being controlled through psychological tricks and data models. Fear of missing out(FOMO) is one of the tricks used by Internet companies, and it is exacerbated by social media due to the unmet social relatedness needs. The negative influence has become an ethical issue that needs to be noticed by young people.

In this project, I tried to explore how to balance social anxiety and productivity. Through continuous user researches and tests, I found a balance that users will not feel over anxious when focusing on the real world. And by integrating fragmented Information, they could spend less time reading the dispersed data.
