Overview

The app serves two primary functions: translation and legal/medical support for women, particularly those living in rural areas. The translation feature utilizes an interactive and educational approach to promote the preservation and learning of Nüshu. Through the camera recognition technology, users can capture and translate objects into Nüshu, or they can directly translate words. By exploring the complexity of language, users can gain a deeper understanding of the gender oppression prevalent in Chinese history and how Nüshu empowered women of that time to make their own statements. The app not only provides an introduction to the language and its cultural significance but also seeks to connect individuals from diverse backgrounds to the Nüshu community. In addition, the app offers legal and medical aid specifically tailored to women in rural communities, where access to these resources may be limited. We strive to create a safe and accessible space for all women through our app.

Background

Nüshu has been known as a writing system created and used by women in a remote part of China. This secret language gave women the power to express their sadness and hopes in an era that barred them from political and social life. It is not just a script − it represents a typical Chinese traditional female culture. It is also a culture of sunshine that allows women to speak their own statements and against male chauvinism.

Problem Statement

How might we preserve Nüshu language and its spirit in a modern and interactive way?

Ideation

  • Nüshu Community

As the function of Nüshu is to socialize and form support groups, I propose a Nüshu Community. The translator would be the first project. The intention of the community is to contribute to revitalize Nüshu with cross-cultural perspectives and carry its spirit to help women.

  • Translator

One of the most vibrant elements of culture is the use of native languages and the time-honored tradition of storytelling. For this project, translator will be the framework that introduce the Nüshu culture to audience from different backgrounds.

  • Image Recogition

Today’s technology can help provide an educational and interactive way to promote language

learning and preservation. With image recognition, the website can identify objects, inform users of their names in Nüshu and its connection with it.

  • Medical/Legal Support

For women in rural area, the medical or legal support might not be very accessible and they will have considerations that stop them to search for help. Nüshu community will have an online section for the basic knowledge in these two field. Physical workshops are also available.

Part of the Process Book

For the research document, I explored the Nüshu language and many other social factors to analyze the demand of women in the contemporary society.
