Overview

The concept of social conformity and its possible effects on individuals is explored in two separate projects.

Social Conformity: A type of social influence involving a change in belief or behaviour in order to fit in with a group.

#1 Conformity Factory

The introductory piece is a screen-based animation that aims to define this term. The protagonist, 0722, is subjected to two tests that showcase the immense power of conformity and the perils of abiding by it blindly. Drawing inspiration from the renowned Asch experiment and an experiment featured in the Brain Games series, the two tests are a powerful representation of the overwhelming effects of conformity that can compromise our individuality and critical thinking abilities.

#2 Bonsai School

The second project is a physical welcome pack for a Bonsai School, which serves as a metaphor for how children are often shaped and molded by the expectations and norms of society. Specifically, I seek to spotlight how the Bonsai School and its focus on science represents the increasing pressure parents exert on their children to pursue careers in STEM fields, leaving little room for individual expression and creativity. By contemplating the message conveyed in these projects, viewers are urged to reflect on how social conformity can constrain not only individual potential but also shape the society we live in.
